Our Story
New Community Foundation was founded on a simple belief: every person deserves a genuine opportunity to learn, grow, contribute, and thrive regardless of their neighborhood, income, race, language, disability, immigration experience, or life circumstances.
The Foundation’s vision is informed by firsthand teaching, administrative, and consulting experience in the area of Los Angeles formerly known as South Central, and the Antelope Valley. South Central, a community with a deep history of culture, resilience, activism, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Through work with students, families, educators, and community members, our founder saw both the extraordinary strengths present in historically marginalized neighborhoods and the persistent inequities that can limit access to opportunity.
Across Los Angeles County in communities like South Central and the Antelope Valley, too many children, youth, families, and community-based organizations in underserved communities face barriers that are not caused by a lack of ability, ambition, or care. Unequal access to quality education, reliable information, supportive services, funding, technology, transportation, disproportionate disciplinary practices, and trusted community networks can make it harder for individuals and families to reach their goals.
New Community Foundation was created to help address those gaps.
Built with Community, Not Just for Community
We believe underserved communities are rich in knowledge, resilience, culture, leadership, and possibility. Families, educators, youth, local leaders, faith communities, and grassroots organizations understand their communities’ strengths and challenges better that anyone else.
Our work is grounded in a culturally appropriate and community-responsive perspective. We recognize that effective support must account for the histories, identities, languages, values, lived experiences, and aspirations of the people being served. Rather than imposing one-size -fits-all solutions, we listen, build trust, honor community knowledge, and work alongside residents and partners to advance solutions shaped by the people most affected.
The name New Community Foundation represents a renewed way of working together, one in which communities that have too often been excluded from opportunity are centered in planning, investment, and decision-making.
Why We Focus on Education and Capacity
Education is one of the strongest pathways to long-term opportunity, yet access to educational support is not equal. Students in underserved communities may encounter under-resources schools, economic hardship, language barriers, disability-related barriers, housing instability, limited technology access, racial and cultural bias, or systems that are difficult for families to navigate.
We also recognize the urgent need to disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline: the set of policies, practices, and inequitable disciplinary patterns that can push students, especially Black, Latino, Indigenous, disabled, and other marginalized youth out of learning environments and toward exclusion, punishment, and involvement with the justice system.
New Community Foundation supports approaches that keep young people connected to learning, relationships, and opportunity. This includes strengthening family engagement, promoting student voice and leadership, encouraging restorative and supportive school practices, expanding access to advocacy and mentorship, and partnering with schools and community organizations committed to equitable outcomes. We believe every student deserves to be seen for their potential, not defined by a moment of difficulty, a disciplinary record, or the barriers they have experienced.
We also know that community-based organizations are often trusted first responders to local needs. These organizations may have strong relationships and powerful ideas but limited access to unrestricted funding, technical assistance, planning support, data tools, and collaborative networks. By supporting organizational capacity, partnerships, governance, planning, and evaluation, we help local leaders build sustainable programs and expand their ability to serve their communities.

New Community Foundation exists to turn equity into action by strengthening educational opportunity, honoring culture and community wisdom, disrupting harmful systems, and investing in the people and organizations working every day to build stronger, safer, and more just communities.
